Today we spotlight our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, a full-bodied single origin coffee, which highlights beans from Africa.

Geography

The beans of our Ethipoian Yirgacheffe blend originate from the birthplace of coffee, the mountainous regions of Ethiopia, where, according to legend, is the famed location that a goat herder, Kaldi, first discovered the coffee bean. The legend says that Kaldi discovered the coffee bean after his goats ate the coffee berries from a certain tree. The goats were so energized that they couldn’t sleep through the night. Kaldi reported his discovery to an abbot at a local monastery who then made a drink with the berries. The drink kept the abbot animated and alert throughout the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared this sensational find with other monks at the monastery and word slowly began to spread about the exciting effect of these berries.

Yirgacheffe, in the Sidamo region, is south of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. Yirgacheffe coffee is a wet processing coffee grown at elevations of 5,800 feet to 6,600 feet above sea level.

Flavor

Yirgacheffe has an undisputed reputation as one of the world’s best coffees. This coffee is unique, with aromas and flavor notes of caramelized orange, chocolate and molasses and boasts a full body with a clean finish. Thousands of varieties of coffee beans grow in Ethiopia and the flavor tends to be much larger due to the vast flavor spectrum. Yirgacheffe’s floral and citrus flavors make it ideal for a cold brew or iced coffee, and it also brews wonderfully in a Chemex, French Press or a TruBru.

Pairing

This fruity flavored coffee is uniquely situated to be paired with your favorite fruit desserts. We recommend pairing the Yirgacheffe blend with a delicious blackberry cobbler, key lime pie, strawberry shortcake, apple crisp or even your grandmother’s famous banana cream pie. Any fruit-inspired dessert will blend delightfully with a hot or cold cup of Yirgacheffe blend coffee.

When you are sipping on your Yirgacheffe blend, let it remind you of a place far, far away where coffee was discovered and palates would be forever transformed.
